Healquin™ (Halquinol) Bolus 1.5 g

Halquinol Bolus 1.5 g veterinary antimicrobial medication.

1. Category

Veterinary Intestinal Antimicrobial (Gut-acting Antimicrobial)

Healquin™ (Halquinol) Bolus contains Halquinol, an antimicrobial that acts primarily within the gastrointestinal lumen. It is intended to support the management of bacterial enteric infections in livestock under veterinary supervision.

2. Indications & Dosage

Healquin™ is indicated for the management of bacterial enteritis and diarrhea associated with susceptible intestinal bacteria in:
Cattle
Buffalo
Calves
Sheep
Goats
It may be used as part of an overall treatment plan together with appropriate fluid therapy and supportive care, as directed by a veterinarian.

3. Mechanism of Action

Metal ion chelation
Halquinol (a mixture of chlorinated hydroxyquinolines) chelates essential metal ions such as Fe²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Cu²⁺.
These metal ions are required as cofactors for many microbial enzymes.
Without them, critical metabolic reactions slow or stop.
Enzyme inhibition
By depriving microorganisms of essential metal ions, Halquinol inhibits several metalloenzymes involved in:
Energy production
DNA synthesis
RNA synthesis
Protein synthesis
This reduces microbial growth and multiplication.
Disruption of cell membrane function
Halquinol alters membrane permeability.
This causes leakage of essential intracellular components and disturbs nutrient transport and ion balance.
Interference with microbial metabolism
The combined effects impair ATP production and other metabolic pathways.
The microorganism can no longer maintain normal cellular functions.
Local intestinal action
Because Halquinol is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, it remains in high concentrations within the intestinal lumen.
This allows it to exert its antimicrobial effect where enteric pathogens are located while producing minimal systemic exposure.
Spectrum of activity
Halquinol has activity against susceptible:
Gram-positive bacteria
Gram-negative bacteria
Some fungi and yeasts
Certain protozoa (depending on species and susceptibility)
